Kaylene Whiskey b.1976, is a Yankunytjatjara artist who spends her days painting and working at Iwantja Arts – an Aboriginal-owned art centre situated at Indulkana on the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.
Whiskey creates lively paintings of celebrity women and notable figures such as Wonder Woman, Tina Turner, Cher, and Dolly Parton. Whiskey draws inspiration from pop culture and from her traditional Anangu culture to convey compelling observations about modern life in her Indigenous community in Central Australia. Her portraits celebrate women she views as powerful and heroic in unusual ways; she depicts superheroes and pop music stars hunting, gathering, and engaging with the plants and animals of her local region. Whiskey’s work bridges the traditional heritage of the elders in her community with a new generation brought up with contemporary Western culture. Her work has been exhibited in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and is held in numerous public and private collections.
